What to Know About Lymphedema Papillomas (and What to Do if You Have Them)

Lymphedema is already challenging enough — but when you start to notice skin changes like small wart-like growths, it can be confusing, even alarming. These are called lymphatic papillomas, and they’re more common than you think in people living with chronic swelling.

As a Certified Lymphedema Therapist who works with clients across the globe, I’ve helped many individuals manage this skin complication — and the good news is: there are things you can do to support your skin and lymphatic system.

What Are Lymphedema Papillomas?

Lymphedema papillomas are benign (non-cancerous) skin growths that can develop in areas of chronic lymphatic swelling. They often appear soft, rough, and slightly raised — sometimes resembling small cauliflower-like warts.

While they are not contagious or dangerous, they can feel irritating, itchy, or lead to cosmetic concerns. In some cases, they may become inflamed or infected if the surrounding skin is compromised.

Why They Happen

There’s no single cause, but papillomas often form due to:

  • Chronic inflammation in areas where lymph flow is impaired

  • Skin breakdown from long-standing swelling or poorly managed lymphedema

  • Reduced immune response in the skin due to fluid stagnation

They’re most commonly seen in people with long-standing or untreated lymphedema and can affect both the lower and upper body — including the legs, groin, underarms, or genital region.

Signs to Watch For

You might be dealing with papillomas if you notice:

  • Small, soft, wart-like bumps in swollen areas

  • Rough or thickened skin texture

  • Increased local swelling or irritation

  • Itching or sensitivity in the affected skin

While these growths are typically benign, any rapid changes in size, color, or number should be reviewed by a medical provider to rule out other issues.

Managing Lymphedema Papillomas: A 3-Part Strategy

Inside our virtual coaching program, we take a comprehensive approach to lymphedema care — and that includes skin changes like papillomas. Here’s how we help clients manage them naturally and safely:

1. Protect & Support the Skin

  • Gentle daily cleansing with mild soap and lukewarm water

  • Moisturizing daily with non-irritating, unscented lotion to prevent cracking

  • Avoiding friction (like from tight clothing or improper garments)

  • Using non-stick dressings over any raised lesions prone to rubbing

2. Manage Swelling Consistently

Proper swelling control is your best defense. We coach clients on how to:

  • Use compression properly (flat knit, wraps, or hybrid options)

  • Incorporate gentle movement to stimulate flow

  • Learn self-lymphatic techniques to reduce congestion in vulnerable areas

3. Seek Medical Treatment if Needed

For persistent or worsening papillomas, you may be referred to a medical specialist. Some options include:

  • Cryotherapy (freezing the lesions)

  • Electrocautery (removal with a heated tool)

  • Surgical excision in more severe or clustered cases

These are typically outpatient procedures and can be coordinated with your care team. But they don’t replace the importance of ongoing lymphatic support to prevent recurrence.

What You Can Do at Home Today

If you’re managing papillomas, here are a few key actions you can take right now:

  • Keep the skin clean and dry (especially in skin folds).

  • Use padding or non-adherent dressings to protect raised areas from friction.

  • Avoid shaving over or near lesions — consider an electric trimmer instead.

  • Track any changes and reach out to your provider for anything unusual.

And most importantly — stay consistent with your full lymphedema routine. These skin changes are often a sign that your lymphatic system needs more structured, gentle support — not less.
